Protective

In contrast to more traditional encapsulation technologies, CeramiSphere is able to combine advantages inherent to ceramics (inert, chemically resistant, thermally stable mechanically strong, UV resistant, etc.) with a true controlled release system.

The unique ceramic matrix means the particles are suited to hosting even the most fragile molecules and will protect them from external attacks such as oxidation, enzymatic degradation and UV irradiation.

In practice, this means that, for example, light sensitive molecules such as avermectins or some biocides can be protected from UV degradation; other molecules such as retinol can be protected from oxidation; biomolecules such as proteins or peptides that are administered orally, can be shielded from acidity and enzymatic attack in the stomach; and cytotoxic agents, when encapsulated with CeramiSphere technology, can survive a physiological pH environment which could otherwise render them inactive.

CeramiSphere technology also offers the advantage of mechanical protection to provide tamper-proof formulation methods for some drugs.  Furthermore, in addition to the payload being given maximum protection from chemical and mechanical bombardment, and there is also minimal interaction between the matrix and the target molecule. Thus, the payload remains unaltered en route to its target, with delivery controlled, depending on the needs of the patient or application. This is a major step forward and when applied to drug delivery systems, has the potential to improve the effectiveness of therapeutics and reduce the risk of side effects caused by agents being released before reaching their targets.
