"Tailored" Release Rate
The microstructure of the particles can be tailor-made to be microporous or mesoporous, varying in size from less than 1 to 100 nanometers, and providing drastically different release rates for the active dopant.
The release rates are independent of particle size and controlled by the internal structure of the porous matrix. This includes the size and overall surface condition (rough or smooth) of each pore. These characteristics dictate the speed at which the encapsulated material can diffuse out of the particle. Thus, the structure can be matched to specific requirements (from diffusion speeds of mg/hr to mg/month). Such an effective and accurate controlled release can be achieved with a very wide range of different active molecules.
The ability to form multi-layered particles also creates the potential for sequential or "delayed" release profile.
